  • The River Remembers–Samuel Beckett Bridge, Dublin

The River Liffey runs dark beneath the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Above it, the sky is full of clouds, and the cables cut through them like lines drawn on paper.

    Dublin goes about its business.

Down in the Docklands, cranes stand over the water with their long arms raised against the sky. Ships wait along the quays. The old working harbor and the new city stand side by side, as if neither quite knows what to make of the other.

The Samuel Beckett is a modern thing, its steel spine bending toward the river, its cables stretched like the strings of a great harp. But the Liffey is older than the streets, older than the buildings, older than the names people give to places.

It carries ships, fishermen, merchants, and men leaving Ireland for a life somewhere else. It holds the stories of the hungry years and the crowded quays. It watches families depart with all they own packed into a case, never knowing whether they will see home again.

Some come back. Many do not.

Now the Docklands are changing. Glass buildings rise where cargo once comes ashore. The cranes remain, reminders of a time when the river is Dublin’s road to the world. The bridge joins the two banks, carrying people who cross without giving the water a second thought.

I stand and watch the river.

There is no great revelation in it. No sudden understanding of Ireland or its people. There is only the Liffey, the Samuel Beckett Bridge, the ships, and the gray light settling over the Docklands.

    Sometimes that is enough.

A city does not tell you its story all at once. You walk its streets. You look at its buildings and the faces of the people who live there. You stand beside its river and wait.

    The Liffey does not hurry.

It watches Dublin change. The bridge carries people across, and most never give it a second thought.

    But the river remembers.

And for a little while, standing there beneath the Irish sky, I feel I am looking at more than a bridge and a stretch of water. I am looking at a city making its way between what it is and what it hopes to become.
